Geography in Mauritius

The island Mauritius is located 1,200 miles off the southeastern coast of Africa in and has a surface area of 720 square miles, which is situated just above the Tropic of Capricorn in the south of Indian Ocean. It has a central plateau which is about 400 meters above sea level being a volcanic origin. As it is on the coastal plains, majority of the island is bordered by a broken ring of mountain ranges with streams flowing through ancient cracks formed by the lava flow.  

Its coastline is surrounded by white sandy beaches and is protected from the ocean by the world’s third largest coral reef.  The island features nearly uninhabited islets that waters of the coast and are popular weekend options for locals and tourists as well. The highest point in Mauritius is Mount Piton at 2,716 ft.
