Geography in Rome

Rome is located in the central-western part of the Italian peninsula on the banks of the river Tiber. Interestingly, Vatican City is a country within the city limit of Rome – yes, it is a country in a city. The River Tiber is the second largest river in Italy, after River Po. Tiber is a historic river that originates in the Monte Fumaiolo and flows into the Tyrrhenian Sea. The river has been crucial for the birth and expansion of the city of Rome. Historically, the city was founded on a group of seven hills located in the present-day Lazio region of Italy. These hills are located on the Tiber River's eastern bank. The elevated location gave people a sense of protection while the River Tiber provided water for daily needs and further for navigation, opening trade and commerce routes.
