Geography in Italy

Italy is located in Southern Europe and is shaped like a boot. It is swaying into the Mediterranean Sea sharing borders with France, Austria, Switzerland and Slovenia in the north which boasts some of the highest peaks in Europe. In central Italy, Tuscany has a diverse landscape full of rolling hills, lush river valleys, small mountain ranges and long coastlines. To the east is the “green heart of Italy”, Umbria which is hilly with broad landscapes, olive groves and pines and a region of gentle mountains, rivers and fertile plains known as Le Marche.

Going towards the south lies Rome which is Italy’s capital city. Within this region lies Vatican City the world’s smallest country by landmass. The south of this country is very dry in comparison to the north characterized by dry rocky mountains and volcanic surfaces. The islands of Sicily and Sardinia are situated offshore to the southwest and west respectively.
