The MCG is much beyond a sports venue. With a capacity of 100,000 people, the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) popularly known as G by the local Australian is the 10th largest stadium in the world. Since 1859 it has been the home of Australian football and was the birthplace of Test cricket in 1877 and one-day international cricket in 1971.MCG has also spectator and venue for many blockbuster music concerts and even Pope John Paul II held a mass there when he visited Melbourne in 1986.
