Frequently Asked Questions

Because it’s one of the world’s best “scenic + experience” destinations: dramatic landscapes, clean cities, safe travel environment, easy road trips, Māori culture, lakes & glaciers, and strong family/adventure options.

  • North Island (Auckland, Rotorua, Wellington, Bay of Islands, Coromandel)
  • South Island (Christchurch, Queenstown, Tekapo, glaciers, fjords)

  • Auckland: Sky Tower, waterfront/Viaduct, Rangitoto, day trips to Waiheke
  • Rotorua: geothermal parks, Māori cultural experiences, Redwood forest
  • Paihia (Bay of Islands): cruises, dolphins, Cape Reinga tours (long day), beaches
  • Coromandel: Cathedral Cove (access may be restricted at times), Hot Water Beach
  • Wellington: Te Papa Museum, cable car, Zealandia
  • Picton: Marlborough Sounds, gateway for Interislander ferry
  • Christchurch: Botanic Gardens, tram, day trips to Tekapo/Mt Cook
  • Lake Tekapo / Twizel: lake views, stargazing region, Mt Cook access
  • Wanaka: lakefront, Roys Peak (hike), relaxed vibes
  • Queenstown: gondola, lake, Milford Sound day trip, adventure activities
  • Franz Josef: glacier region + rainforest feel
  • Dunedin: Scottish heritage, Otago Peninsula wildlife
  • Invercargill: gateway to Stewart Island, deep south landscapes

New Zealand is year-round, but “best” depends on your priorities:
  • Dec–Feb (Summer): warmest, busiest, best for lakes/road trips.
  • Mar–May (Autumn): fewer crowds, still pleasant, great drives.
  • Jun–Aug (Winter): snow + ski towns (Queenstown/Wanaka), colder South Island.
  • Sep–Nov (Spring): fresh weather, shoulder season deals.
  • Rain season rule of thumb: West Coast (Franz Josef side) is wet most of the year; many places have higher rainfall in cooler months, but it varies by region.

Practical city-wise seasonal feel  :
  • Auckland / Paihia / Coromandel: warmer, humid; winter mild; rain possible anytime.
  • Rotorua: cooler mornings/evenings; can feel chilly in winter.
  • Wellington: windy, cool; weather changes fast.
  • Christchurch: drier, crisp winters, warm summers.
  • Tekapo/Twizel/Queenstown/Wanaka: big day-night difference; winters cold; summers pleasant.
  • Franz Josef (West Coast): frequent rain; pack rainwear always.

New Zealand is ahead of India in time. New Zealand Standard Time (NEW ZEALANDST): +6 hours 30 minutes ahead of Indian Standard Time (IST). New Zealand observes Daylight Saving from late September to early April. During this period, New Zealand becomes +7 hours 30 minutes ahead of India.

Expect “4 seasons in a day” in some areas. Wind + sudden showers are common. Pack layers and a light rain jacket.

If you’re doing FIT, walking depends on your choices:
  • City + viewpoints: light walking
  • Trails/glaciers/adventure: moderate to heavy
  • We can keep the plan “easy mobility” if needed.

  • Layering is key (t-shirt + fleece + jacket)
  • Rain jacket/poncho
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Sunglasses + sunscreen (UV is strong)
  • Winter: warm jacket, gloves, beanie (South Island).

Yes — New Zealand connects well to Australia and many Pacific/Asian hubs. Common add-on are Australia, Fiji, Bora Bora, Bali, Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia
Points to be noted for internal airlines
  • Domestic flights often low-cost style: meals may not be included.
  • Baggage limits may be lower than international; excess is chargeable.
  • Sometimes via flights / layovers occur.
  • For FIT, we prefer timings with buffer to avoid missed connections.

Most Indian passport holders need a Visitor Visa (apply online). Immigration NEW ZEALAND explains Visitor Visa requirements and process
Avail New Zealand visas by applying online. We do Visa process applications for our guests. We ensure a seamless application process to avail of a New Zealand Tourist Visa for Indians. The processing time is around 6 to 8 weeks.
Firstly please note, to get New Zealand visa you need to have good IT returns, liquid assets and good travel history.
Here are the general steps:

Determine the Visa Type:
New Zealand tourist visas are typically issued under the subclass 600 category. There are different streams within this category, such as the Tourist stream, Sponsored Family stream, and Approved Destination Status stream. You should choose the one that best suits your purpose of visiting New Zealand.

Eligibility Check:
Before applying, make sure you meet the eligibility criteria for the chosen visa category. Eligibility criteria may include financial requirements, health and character checks, and the genuine temporary entrant requirement.
Gather Required Documents:

Prepare all necessary documents, which may include:
A valid passport with a validity of a minimum of six months beyond your intended stay.
Visa application form, which you can complete online on the official website.
Passport-sized photographs as per specific requirements.
Proof of sufficient funds to cover your stay in New Zealand - like bank statements.
Travel itinerary, including flight and hotel bookings.
Proof of ties to India, like employment letters, property documents, or family connections.
Are any additional documents required for your specific visa stream?

Send the Docs to us:
Once you have all documents ready, then you can share the same with us to process further.

Biometrics and Health Checks:
Depending on your circumstances, you may be required to undergo biometrics (fingerprints and photos) and/or a medical examination. Follow the instructions provided in your application.

Attend an Interview:
In some cases, you may have to attend an interview at the nearest New Zealand embassy or consulate.

Wait for a Decision:
Visa processing times can vary, so be patient

Visa Grant:
If your visa is approved, you will receive a visa grant notification. Please read and understand the terms and conditions of your visa.

Travel to New Zealand:
Once you have your visa, you can travel to New Zealand for the specified period.
Comply with Visa Conditions:

While in New Zealand, adhere to all the conditions stated in your visa, including the duration of your stay. Always verify the latest requirements and procedures on the official New Zealand government website or consult with the New Zealand embassy or consulate nearest to you. Visa rules and conditions may change, so it is vital to have the most current information.

For more detailed information regarding this, please refer to our Visa portal - www.flamingotravels.co.in/visa

It depends on whether the passport is on the visa waiver list (then they travel on NEW ZEALAND instead of a visa). Immigration NEW ZEALAND publishes the visa waiver list.

In many cases, the Visitor Visa is online, but applicants may need biometrics/VAC steps depending on location and current requirements.

From the country where you are legally residing and where you can complete required steps (biometrics if asked). For most guests: apply from India.

Choose FIT if you want flexibility, privacy, customized hotels, and you’re comfortable managing timings/driving OR having private chauffeur support.

  • Self-drive (rental car)
  • Private vehicle with driver (chauffeur-driven)
  • Seat-in-coach / SIC day tours (shared tours)
  • Mix & match (very common)

Yes — typically you’ll have:
  • Pre-departure briefing
  • Emergency contact/support line
  • Vouchers/tickets shared digitally
  • Local supplier contacts (activity operators/hotels)

You still must follow:
  • Activity time slots
  • Hotel check-in/check-out windows
  • Domestic flight reporting times
  • Ferry departure times
  • FIT = flexible routing, not “no timing”.

Typical FIT logic:
  • AKL → Rotorua: road trip
  • AKL → Wellington: flight or long road trip
  • Wellington ↔ Picton: ferry (Interislander)
  • CHC → Tekapo → Queenstown: scenic self-drive
  • Queenstown → Milford Sound: long day trip by coach or self-drive (coach recommended for comfort)
  • (We share your final plan with drive hours per day so you can judge fatigue.)

  • Flights (best for long jumps)
  • Self-drive (best for scenic circuits)
  • Intercity buses (budget option)
  • Trains (limited routes, scenic)

Yes — but the itinerary becomes longer because routes may have limited frequency (sometimes only one main service/day on certain sectors).

  • Self-drive
  • Private vehicle
  • Seat-in-coach

Yes. You need a valid license + credit card; insurance options are offered at pickup.

If your license is not in English, carry an IDP or certified translation (recommended). If English, usually not needed and 12 months old

Yes, you can drive a rental vehicle in New Zealand at 19 years of age, but there are important conditions and limitations you should be aware of:
  • Minimum age requirement:
Most rental companies allow drivers aged 18–20, but this varies by supplier.
  • Young Driver Surcharge:
Drivers under 21 or 25 years (depending on the rental company) are usually charged a young driver fee per day.
  • Vehicle category restrictions:
At 19, you are typically allowed to rent:
  • Compact cars
  • Economy cars
  • You may not be permitted to rent:
  • Large SUVs
  • Vans
  • Premium or luxury vehicles
Driving licence requirements:
  • A full, valid driving licence is required (not a learner or provisional licence).
  • If the licence is not in English, an International Driving Permit (IDP) or certified translation is mandatory.
Insurance excess:
Young drivers usually have:
  • Higher insurance excess
  • Mandatory minimum insurance coverage (cannot opt out)
Credit card requirement:
A credit card in the driver’s name is compulsory for the security deposit.
Driving rules still apply strictly:
  • Drive on the left-hand side
  • Zero tolerance for drink driving for young drivers
  • Strict adherence to speed limits
If the Driver’s age is not declared at the time of bookings, supplements cost has to be paid by the guest

  • Compact
  • Sedan
  • SUV
  • Premium/luxury (as per budget)
  • Pick based on luggage, passengers, and route comfort.

Current Approximate Fuel Prices
  • Petrol (91 Octane): NEW ZEALANDD 2.70 – 3.10 per litre
  • Petrol (95 Octane): NEW ZEALANDD 2.85 – 3.30 per litre
  • Diesel: NEW ZEALANDD 1.90 – 2.30 per litre
(Note: Diesel vehicles also attract Road User Charges (RUC), usually handled by rental companies)
Rough Fuel Budget for FIT Travellers
  • Compact/Sedan: NEW ZEALANDD 12–15 per 100 km
  • SUV: NEW ZEALANDD 15–20 per 100 km
  • Long scenic drives (South Island): Budget NEW ZEALANDD 40–70 per driving day, depending on distance
Fuel costs in New Zealand are relatively higher than India, so we recommend budgeting approximately NEW ZEALANDD 15–20 per 100 km for self-drive itineraries

Yes — diesel vehicles, heavy vehicles, and EVs pay Road User Charges (RUC).
If you rent such a vehicle, the rental company usually handles it; confirm at booking.

What types of vehicles and fuel are used?
  • Petrol (most common)
  • Diesel (often SUVs/vans)
  • Hybrid/EV (increasing)

Yes, there are a few toll roads (not many). Payment is usually online or via rental toll admin (confirm with rental provider).

  • City centres often paid parking (machines/apps)
  • Observe signage carefully (time limits, resident zones)
  • Fines apply for wrong zones/overstay

Under NEW ZEALAND law, children under 8 years must use an appropriate approved child restraint.
Best practice is booster until seatbelt fits correctly.

Common rental cover types:
  • Basic cover with excess/deductible
  • CDW/LDW (reduces damage liability)
  • Theft protection
  • Windscreen/tyre add-on
  • Premium “zero excess” options (varies by supplier)

CDW = Collision Damage Waiver (limits your liability for damage)
Excess/Deductible = amount you pay before insurance covers rest
Bond/Deposit = refundable hold on credit card
Excluded areas = places not covered (rare roads, off-road etc—supplier specific)

Check:
  • Excess amount
  • What’s excluded (gravel damage, tyres, windscreen, water crossings)
  • Single-vehicle accidents coverage
  • Additional driver fees
  • Credit card cover eligibility (some cards cover, some don’t)

1). Book car category + add-ons (GPS, child seat)
2). Pickup: license + passport + credit card hold
3). Inspect vehicle + take photos
4). Understand fuel policy (full-full usually)
5). Return on time + refuel as required

  • Chauffeur is available for 10 hours daily   (Except  - Departure it is only Airport transfers)
  • Quote based on private touring basis. Please check all the details carefully and advise if anything is missing in the same.
  • 2 conditions for driver
  • A- 30 mins break after every 5hours
  • B- 10 hours difference in between finishing and starting again.
  • Timings as per charter package
  • Night driving/late returns may incur surcharge
  • Route changes allowed but can impact cost/time

Visit a local GP/urgent care; use travel insurance support line. Keep receipts and doctor notes for claims.

Call 111 for Police/Fire/Ambulance in emergencies.

It may not be “mandatory” for everyone in all cases, but it is strongly recommended for medical + cancellations + baggage + rental excess support.

Yes, generally very safe; standard travel precautions still apply (keep valuables secure, avoid isolated areas late night alone).

  • Drive on the left
  • Start long drives early
  • Don’t speed on winding roads
  • Weather can close roads—keep buffer
  • Keep phone charged; carry water/snacks

File a report and contact the Indian mission/consular services. Your tour support team will guide steps.

  • Hotel: reception + services; usually smaller rooms
  • Aparthotel/Apartment: more space + kitchen/laundry, fewer services, No Room Services & Housekeeping

Compared to some countries, many standard rooms can feel compact—especially in city centres.

  • Hotels: usually no cooking, except kitchenette rooms
  • Apartments/aparthotels: yes, with proper kitchen facilities

Often continental (cereal, bread, fruit, coffee) and sometimes hot items. In apartments, breakfast may not be included.

Air conditioning is available in New Zealand, but it is not standard across all cities and accommodations. In major cities such as Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Queenstown, most modern 4-star hotels and newer apartments offer air conditioning, while budget hotels, motels, and older properties may provide heating only. In smaller towns and scenic regions like Lake Tekapo, Twizel, Wanaka, FraNew Zealand Josef, Paihia, and Coromandel, many accommodations do not have air conditioning, as the climate is generally cool and pleasant, especially at night. Heating is more commonly available than cooling throughout New Zealand.
