EGYPT- The Land Of Pharaohs

Egypt is a country that lies on the southwest corner of Asia and northeast corner of Africa via a land bridge formed by the Sinai Peninsula. It is the world’s only nation having borders adjacent to three continents: Asia, Europe and Africa. Egypt is the most populous country in North Africa and the Arab World. Majority of the people live close to the banks of the Nile River which has the only available cultivable land, whereas country’s majority of the area is constituted of Sahara desert which is sparsely populated. Egypt’s fifty percent population lives in urban areas in and around the Nile Delta, Cairo and Alexandria. The History of Egypt dates back to as long as 10th century BC.

The significant political, cultural, and military influence has made Egypt a regional power in the Muslim world, Middle East and North Africa. It’s economy is one of the largest and most diversified in the Middle East, with sectors such as industries, tourism, agriculture and services contributing equally to the economy of the country.

In ancient Egypt, The Pharaoh was the political as well as the religious leader of the mass. He was given the titles ‘High Priest of Every Temple’ and ‘Lord of the Two Lands’. The word ‘pharaoh’ is the Greek form which was the designation for the royal residence. As supreme leader of the people, the pharaoh was considered a god on earth, the mediator between the gods and the people, and when he died, he was believed to become Osiris, the god of the dead.

Additionally, the pharaoh would oversee religious rituals, choose the sites of temples and command what work would be done (although he could not choose priests and very rarely took part in the design of a temple). As ‘Lord of the Two Lands’ the pharaoh made the laws, was the owner of all the land in Egypt, gathered taxes and made war or safeguard the country against hostility.

Egypt is one of the most diversified and largest in the Middle East nations. It is considered as the birth place of civilization and has experienced some of the earliest developments of agriculture, writing, central government, urbanization, and organized religion in history.

The most famous tourist attractions of Egypt are the centuries old monuments for which the Nile Valley is world famous. Major among them are the Pyramids and Great Sphinx at Giza, the Abu Simbel temples south of Aswan and the Karnak Temple Complex and Valley of the Kings near Luxor. Cairo also has the Cairo Museum and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali Pasha. The coastal areas of Sinai Peninsula are very popular with visitors as well.

ISTANBUL – The City That Lies On Two Continents

Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey contributing to the history, culture and economy of the country. Istanbul is one of those very few cities in the world that lies in two continents, i.e, Europe and Asia. The Bosphorus strait that connects the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara divides the city into its European and Asian parts. The city has pulled number of visitors, two years after it was named a European Capital of Culture, making the city fifth-most-popular tourist destination in the world. The city is popular for its historic center, partially listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The cultural and entertainment hub of the city can be found across natural harbor, the Golden Horn. Rated as a global city, Istanbul is one of the fastest-growing metropolitan economies in the world. It accounts for more than twenty five percent of the country’s GDP and hosts the headquarters of many Turkish companies and media outlets. The city’s historical and commercial centre lies on the European side and about a third of its population lives on the Asian side. By population, Istanbul is the fifth-largest city in the world.

Istanbul is an ancient city that was inhabited by the Thracian tribe around 6th century BC and was named Ligos around 3rd century BC which became one of the most prominent cities in the history of the world. The city has been a witness to Ancient Greece, Phoenicia, Ancient Rome and Ancient Persia. The city had a major contribution in the elevation of Christianity during the times of Byzantine and Roman empires. The Ottomans took control of Istanbul in 1453 and converted it into an Islamic bastion and the seat of the Ottoman Empire.

Because of its, strategic geographical location along the historic Silk Road, rail networks to Middle East and Europe, and the only sea route between the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, Istanbul has been able to nurture a heterogeneous population. Since 1950, the population of the city has grown ten times, as migrants from across Anatolia have swarmed to the metropolis and city limits have enlarged to shelter them. At the end of the 20th century, arts festivals have been established, and the infrastructure improvements have produced a varied transportation network.

Istanbul is one of the important tourist places not only in Turkey but also in the world. One can find thousands of hotels and other tourist related industries catering to both visiting professionals and vacationers. Istanbul has a number of prime attraction including the Blue Mosque (The Sultan Ahmed Mosque), the Topkapı Palace, the Dolmabahçe Palace , the Hagia Sophia, the Basilica Cistern, the Galata Tower, the Spice Bazaar, Pera Palace Hotel and the Grand Bazaar. With the opening up of malls and shopping centers, such as Akmerkez, Metrocity and Cevahir Mall, which is the biggest mall in Europe and seventh largest shopping center in the world, Istanbul has become one of the major shopping centers of the European region. There are various other attractions like museums, cultural events and sporting events.

Windsor Castle : The Royal Castle of England

Windsor Castle is a royal castle at Windsor in Berkshire. Known for its notable architecture, the castle has been associated with the royal families of England and later Britain. For more than 1000 years, the castle has been used as a residence of British kings and queens. Today, it is an official residence of Her Majesty The Queen. There are more than 500 people working and living in the palace. Various ceremonies and state occasions are held here including visits from guests like politicians and public figures as well as Presidents and Monarchs from abroad. The State Apartments are known for their significant architecture and many treasures of the Royal collection. The collections that can be seen here are the Royal Photograph Collection, the Print Room, the Royal Archives and the Royal Library. The palace covers an area of 13 acres. St George’s Hall is 55.5m long and can seat up to 162 for a State Banquet and is the biggest room in the castle. More than 40 monarchs, including Her Majesty The Queen, have called the Castle home.

Founded in 1348 by Edward III, St George’s Chapel which is the spiritual home of the Order of the Garter is also located in the Castle. The Queen uses the castle as her private residence and spends her weekends here. She also uses the residence during Easter in the month of spring for a month, and for a week each June, when she attends the order of the Garter and the Royal Ascot. William was the king who chose the site for Windsor Castle, on the river Thames and on the edge of a Saxon hunting ground. The construction began in 1070 which was completed after 16 years. By 1110, Henry had domestic quarters within the castle. Reconstruction and improvement work of the royal apartment was carried out by Henry III. Moving on, 100 years after Henry III’s major improvement work at Windsor, Edward III added a lot more to it. By spending £50,000, the palace was converted from a military fort to a gothic palace. He wanted to have both, the state apartments for ceremonial and official purpose and the King’s own private apartments in a single residence.

During the English Civil War, the castle was used as a prison for captured royalist officers. In 1660, when Charles II came to power, the year of the restoration of the monarchy, he appointed Hugh May to modernize the royal apartments, which became the grandest baroque state apartments in England. The gothic transformation of the castle continued after George IV succeeded to the throne in 1820. After spending £300,000, the King finally took up residence at Windsor in 1828. During Queen Victoria’s rule, she spent the larger part of every year at Windsor. The Castle was visited by sovereigns, ambassadors and ministers from all over the world and was the setting for a series of splendid state visits by foreign monarchs.

The Amir Of Kuwait On His State Visit To The UK

King George VI and Queen Elizabeth were already living at Royal Lodge in the Windsor Great Park, and considered Windsor very much their home. The Castle survived the Second World War unscathed. However, 50 years later a fire broke out in Queen Victoria’s private chapel in November 1992. The fire spread to the roof spaces, destroying the ceilings of St George’s Hall and the Grand Reception Room, as well as engulfing the private chapel, the State Dining Room and the Crimson Drawing Room in particular. Restoration and repair work began immediately and took five years to complete.

The oldest part of the castle is the motte on which the Round Tower sits, while, the newest part is the Lantern Lobby in the State Apartments. The oldest glazed window in the Castle dates back to 1236 which is believed to have been a wedding gift from King Henry III to his wife Eleanor of Provence. The Great Kitchen at Windsor is the oldest working kitchen in the country and has served more than 32 monarchs. In order to ensure that the food served to The Queen is never late, the clock in the Great Kitchen are always five minutes fast.

La Tomatina : World’s Biggest Food Fight

La Tomatina is considered to be the ‘World’s Biggest food fight’ where thousands and thousands people from all over the world participate. It is estimated that more than a hundred metric tons of over ripe tomatoes are thrown on the street. This food fight festival is held on the last Wednesday of August every year in Bunol town which is thirty eight kilometers from Valencia, Spain. Until 2013, around fifty thousand people took part in this tomato fight, overbursting the city which has a population of nine thousand. However, after 2013, the number of people taking part in the festival has been limited to twenty thousand by issuing official tickets to the participants. The town of Bunol has limited accommodation facilities for those who come to witness La Tomatino. Therefore, many of them stay in Valencia. Due to the food fight festival a lot of dirty mess ensues all over the place, the shopkeepers cover their store fronts with huge plastic sheets in order to protect them from the havoc.

How did La Tomatina Start ?

Ever since 1945, the La Tomatina has been a strong tradition in Bunol. The exact origin of the festival is not known, however the probable speculations are that it began due to a local food fight among friends, a class war amongst juveniles, a cascade of tomatoes from bystanders at a festival display, a practical joke on a bad musician, and the lawless consequence of an accidental lorry spillage. Another favored belief is that the unhappy people of the town charged the town’s councilmen with tomatoes during a town celebration. Whatever may be the reason, it was liked so much that it was rearranged the next year, and all years to come. During the reign of Francisco Franco, the holiday was disallowed citing reasons that it had no religious importance, but restarted in the 1970s after his death.

La Tomatina festival starts around 11 am in the morning with lot of trucks hump the loads of tomatoes into the heart of the town known as Plaza del Pueblo. The tomatoes are procured from the region of Extremadura, where they are available at low cost. The festival officially begins only when one daring soul manages to climb to the top of a wooden pole known as Palojabon, that is greased up and is two storey’s high and has pork tied to it on the top. In actual, this exercise takes a long time and the festival begins even though no one gets to the top of the pole. The signal for the beginning of the fight is with the firing of water cannons, the festival is said to make a head start and then the real fight starts. There are no teams and every person is own their own, once the battle has begun.

After around a hour of fighting, the festival comes to an end. Once this happens, no one is allowed to throw any more tomatoes. After the end of the festival, the cleaning process of the mess starts. Water is sprayed on the streets with the help of fire trucks and water being used from a Roman aqueduct. Since the officers are busier with the cleaning of the town, the people go to the Bunol River in order to wash and cleanup themselves. Some locals may also allow the visitors by providing them water to clean up.

rsz_la_tomatinaLa Tomatina Rules

  • Bottles or any hard article should not be brought along, as they can hurt other people and cause accidents.
  • Do not tear or wrest other people’s clothes.
  • While throwing the tomatoes, they must be squashed so that the impact is reduced.
  • Maintain a safe distance from the trucks and other vehicles.
  • Once the second shot is fired, throwing of tomatoes should be stopped.

Advice for La Tomatina Celebration

  • It is advisable to wear shoes that are closed type which can be thrown after use as wearing flip flops may hurt you or they could tear town very easily.
  • Old clothes or those that you would not reuse should be worn. The clothes are liked to get torn away or get very dirty.
  • Wearing goggles is necessary and also ensure to keep something to clean your eyes.
  • Carry a waterproof camera, if you want to capture some pictures.
  • Visitors are advised to look for and confirm their accommodation in advance due to limited availability.
